At least by our CO's reckoning in various talks, Armageddon can't be too far off because Jehovah has to prevent mankind from "going 'too far' scientifically."

Are JW's getting that desperate? Now they are grasping for straws to bring about Armageddon at last?

That argument, about science, could have been used for centuries. Imagine in Galileo's time, saying that science is going too far and denying God's truth about the earth being at the center of the solar system! God had better step in quick before it's too late!

Nonsense. Science will continue and it has nothing to do with God whatsoever. Religions are just going to have to adjust, as when the WTS backed down from stating that men would never be able to achieve space orbit. Later happened. Oops.
