Hi Australian,
Let me put in my 2 cents:
The price is not only paid by this young man. Rick no longer wishes to participate on H2O in discussions. That is a great loss. I mean literally Rick no longer wants to ever post again. He feels this young man's attitude expressed hatred toward his person, and worse that this is representative of the majority.
I hope Rick doesn't really feel this way. It would be a loss to H2O if Rick never posted again. I don't really want to comment on Covert's actual posts, but I know for a fact that this is not how the majority here feel. When a person posts something, replies might be a little frank, even barbed. But this is a discussion board, not a get-together. A blunt reply usually doesn't signify anything about how the replier feels about the original poster- it's just a comment on the information that was presented. I think a lot of problems happen when people feel when someone attacks their posts, they're attacking the person as well. There are, of course, plenty of people who do actually attack the person. But I'll tell you this: When all the debates are over with, when all the slightly scathing posts are done, the bottom line is that practically everyone here considers Rick a real friend and appreciates his hard work and wants him to stay. You have to look no further than the replies to your own post about his departure.
You might rationalise that Rick is an "adult" and this young man is a "youth" in figuring that how Rick feels is "tough." Our taking a kid gloves approach without hypocrisy would mean we don't ban anyone because everyone has experienced great pain in life.
I can tell you now that I seriously doubt Covert wants anyone to treat him with "kid's gloves". He can deal with it the same as everyone else. I think there was a little too much harshness on both sides.
Does it surprise anyone that Rick, upon discovery he really wasn't reaping much from what he was sowing, kept working on H2o?
That's a good point and one that I think a lot of people (including myself) miss. It's no secret that Rick is disappointed by how H2O has evolved and that he really doesn't derive much benefit from it. It's really an act of unselfishness on his part that he continues to support it.
