The Russian stance is for other reasons. The Serbs are Orthodox Christians, just like Russians. They have that common bond, in contrast with the West and, of course, the Moslems being attacked.
Russia has a religious affinity with the Serbs, and that could explain why they take offense at what is happening. These are their "brothers", in a sense.
