If your understanding of "ad hominem" had been correct, then logically the "by authority" fallacy could not exist.
The letter made a number of unfounded assertions. There were no references, no evidence and no attempt at a logical argument. As such, the assertion
relies fully on the credibility of the person posting the claim. If the person had been a leading expert in anesthetics, it would surely merit attention. As it was, it was a letter from a marketdroid (sorry, but that's what
computer people like me call these guys) to a journalist. Credibility is obviously less than zero.
