:::When the waitress came back, she began wiping down the table and then
swallowed hard at what she saw. There, placed neatly beside the empty dish,
were two nickels and five pennies - her tip.
I know how she felt. A few yrs ago
when we were living in Hong Kong, we were doing our usual shopping in preparation for the western New Year Eve. Getting out of the paid car park was always a hassle and usually the girls collecting the money were blunt and humourless. My
husband believes you should be especially nice to people with menial jobs because life is so monotonous for them, the least you can do is to try to brighten their day. But this day had been especially frustrating, and he wasn't in the
mood for one of those annoying parking ladies with their sour faces. We pulled up to the gate and handed over the money. The girl - one we'd not seen before, was trying to say something in English. David looked impatiently at her, while
she stammered and nodded her head in an effort to put her words together. He was expecting her to say something annoying. Eventually after much effort she blurted out some words, which momentarily perplexed us until we converted the
Chinglish into English. Happy New Year. Was all she was trying to say. David kinda melted thru the seems of his car seat with humility and shame.
