Carborundum is the trade name for silicon carbide, a very hard, dark gray, crystalline material used for making lots of abrasive products. It's ground up into various grit sizes to make "carborundum paper", a common sandpaper used for metals and other hard materials. It's also sintered into a sharpening stone often called a "carborundum stone", which is usually dark gray and has two faces with fine and coarse grits.
