One example of the almost mindless regidity so often created is the case of a Witness in the state of Maine, David Haynes, who operated a security alarm service. Beginning in the 1970s and over a period of years, his business installed many burglar and fire alarm systems. Some of these were in churches and church schools. Then in the 1980s came a request for him to meet with a congregational committee of three Witness elders, Spear, Maddock and Wentworth.
They informed him that he could no longer continue such installation work in religious buildings; to do so would make him liable for DISFELLOWSHIPING. He agreed to stop. Later the elders informed him that he must also stop servicing the systems already installed. He told them he would comply and arrange for his service manager(not a JW) to go on his own time and do such servicingm and also provided that this man would receive all the compensation involved.
Even this was
not satisfactory to the elders, however, for the systems were tied in with a central monitoring system at his business office. The elders informed him that he could no longer monitor the churches and church schools without jeopardizing his
standing in the congregation. He offered to see what he could do to transfer the monitoring to other businesses, but this would take time. He was granted a specific period of time, which he could not meet because of some equipment
problems.
When it was up, he begged and pleaded for consideration and forbearance, he was disfellowshipped. He had been associated for 15 years.
I do not find this account hard to believe. I have been to several congregations and
there is always admonishions to avoid doing businesses with certain organizations. It was even part of my baptism study questions.
I really don't see where it is the anyone's business who you do business with.
