Yes, it's the Eastern "half" of the Catholic church which is in Schism.
They're basic doctrines are remarkably similar.
Mary = New Eve = Theotokos Mother of God.
Eucharist is Sacrifice/Meal, Transubstantiation.
Apostolic
Succession of the Episcopate.
Invocation of the Saints for their intercession.
Communion of Saints.
Their basic disagreement is over the office of the Papacy, which they claim (falsely, as a matter of history) that they the easterners never, ever accepted.
Actually, their great scholars whom they venerate, such as S. John Chrysostom, onetime Patriarch of Constantinople, explicitly supported the Catholic dogma of the Petrine Office. When I showed that to my
best friend, (GREEK Orthodox), he was
stunned out of his wits, and quite angry to learn that this was generally hidden from parishoners.
In no way can the E.O.'s be considered "protestants," in any doctrinal sense, and they specifically and explicitly regard the protestant reformation of the 16th century as a MAJOR "Heresy," and vehemently rejected overtures made to them by the Reformers themselves.
Best regards,
Jaypeeto :)
