You might also read her Muhammed: a Biography of the Prophet -- lots of background about why Islam made sense in 7th-century southern Arabia, and why Muhammad's response to the social and political needs of his time was largely pretty da** brilliant.
Lost of fascinating stuff about the history of Muslim/Christian relations (which is a long and frequently sorry tale).
