When the desperado gang rode away, leaving most of the men of the town lying dead in the streets, those who remained alive ran to the sheriff's office. "Do something!" They cried. "Don't you see what's happening? They're killing us all!"
The sheriff rose slowly from his chair and shuffled out onto the boardwalk fronting his office. He stood for a moment and surveyed the survivors of the massacre.
"Ridiculous," he exclaimed. "Look at you... you're all standing right here. Frank, are you here?" he demanded, pointing at Frank. "Judy, are you here? How about you, Mary Ann?"
He glared at the crowd a moment more. "Now, look around you," he said. "Look! Why, the street is nearly filled with you! There must be upward of 25 of you standing here. And yet, you have the audacity to tell me that gang is 'killing you all off.' What rubbish! Now, get back to your business and leave me alone." And he turned, shuffled his way back inside, and shut and barred the door.
