I believe one approach the Society will use is to move supposed fulfillments of prophecy from the past to the future (as they did with separating the sheep from the goats and the "signs in the sun and moon and
stars", both of which were formerly understood to be already taking place, but since 1995 have been understood to be yet future). This approach provides several advantages:
- it can be used to explain away embarassing past
viewpoints/predictions ("new light"!)
- it provides much needed material to fill The Watchtower and district convention parts
- it creates a 'need' for continued reliance upon the Society, whether this be directed by a
scripturally unauthorized "Governing Body" and "faithful and discreet slave class" or by a similarly non-scriptural "Chieftain class".
After all, you can only recycle the same old stuff for so many years before the present generation
starts wising up and asking questions.Rational
