You come across on here as being a mature, intelligent, insightful and thoughtful man, Covert. All these traits would serve you well as a moderator. Are you willing to delete posts when you know the poster is going to raise a ruckus about it? Are you willing to delete posts when you know that the poster is never going to agree that his words should be revised? Are you willing to be called names and insulted for trying to do what seems right to you?
If you can handle all that and not lose your serenity, then come on!
