Rick's post reminded me of a quotation from Woody Allen, which I can't quote word-for-word, but goes something like this: "We are at a crossroads, facing on the one hand bleak despair and utter hopelessness, and on the other hand, total extinction. Let us pray to have the wisdom to choose correctly."

I am always interested in the perceptions of foreigners regarding my country, the USA. I grew up in the 1950's in a rural community where life was closer to 19th century than 20th century. I was very lucky, but did not know it at the time. When I visited New York City at age 15 (to attend my first large JW convention), I remember looking at the tenements and the clotheslines 20 stories high strung between buildings and listening to the noise and wondering, "What kind of person would I have been if I had to grow up in a place like this." Equality is an ideal we still must work on in a big way.
