Your statement, while technically correct, implies that we are more limited than may actually be the case. While we seem to process one thing at a time these processes are very rapid, especially in the intelligent, just as they are in a 500 MHz Pentium computer. If conscious thought is in the �foreground� many other data are processed in the �background.� Background processing includes, but is not limited to respiration, perspiration, cardio-vascular status and function, olfactory sensations, sensory data from the skin, vision data, sound data, quantity/pressure gauge on the bladder, quantity and pressure gauges on the colon, temperature gauges on the skin, etc. As the data from these sensors reach a preset level these data come to the conscious level for further processing and action.
