Whilst I agree with the complexities of the Wright brother's invention and the thought processes involved (always easier to figure out how something works as opposed to developing the concept initially).

I would propose the following, the first is probably biased due to my North American hereitage.

1. Discovery of the "New World" This led to the creation of the current world power and essentially the single largest political influence in the world.

or

2. The discovery of electricity and inventions of how to harness such.

While 1914 was an important chapter in human history I would not say that it is the PIVOTAL date upon which allr evolves. Even looking at teh past century the creation of atomic weapons has been more of a pivotal event than the "war to end all wars."

But then July 1964 (my D.O.B.)was pretty darn important as well. And then there was the day they created the first single malt Scotch. :-)
