JWs use the NWT primarily (exclusively?) because they are accustomed to it. Most JWs will tell you that it is not a requirement that the NWT be used, but because it is more "accurate" than most (relating particularly to key texts such as John 1:1, Acts 20:28 and so forth), there would be less confusion when dispensing the truth about certain doctrinal teachings. I personally think that most JWs aren't aware that many more translations actually exist besides the NWT and the KJV.
As far as the Green Bible, well, I believe it was in service until the early eighties. Yes, very ugly, but then again, if you look at contemporary books from the
period of the '60s and '70s, lots of book covers (and carpeting, and automobiles!) weren't much to look at. I don't know what the householders' reception to it would have been.
