I don’t understand Long Islanders. Energy is a serious issue and many people depend on it to live. Electricity powers the traffic lights as well as medical devices that many people depend on to live. But, energy is treated as a source of financial windfall by many, often by people with less than honest motives.

Many years ago nuclear power was thought to be an extremely cheap source of energy so a nuclear power plant was proposed to be located at Shoreham. The proposal was accepted and the plant was allowed to be built especially because of the money that a project of its size would generate.

Overall over $5 billion was either spent on Long Island or past through the local economy with many people getting a cut. There were obscene overtime amounts with some people starting careers and retiring on the Shoreham project.

While this was happening few dissenting voices were heard. Safety arose during the project, but not much was heard about them. Ironically when the project was completed and the money stopped flowing the dissenting voices became loud and safety became a very important issue.

Is it a coincidence that the money stopped and opposition to the plant started
