The modern flower children I was born in 1961 and grew up during the 1960’s and 1970’s. The promotion of “peace and love” was everywhere. It was on signs, worn on lapels, on the television, in the music and so much more. The concepts of the 60’s flower children were and still are very desirable. The problem was that the peace and love as a political platform was an idea that was unrealistic in a very real world. Many people concentrated on a world of peace and love while completely ignoring basic humanity as if the very core that constitutes human beings somehow miraculously changed. Make no mistake I personally desire a world of peace and love, but I also see that a world of peace and love is a utopian idea that is impossible to attain. The problem as I see it is that the impressionable young people that also grew up in the 1960’s and 1970’s now hold positions of power. A world of peace and love was not realistic in the early 1900’s, not in the 1960’s/1970’s and it is not realistic now. A world of peace and love should NOT be abandoned as a goal, but pragmatic thinking that considers basic human nature is very important and should not be ignored. William F. Egerter
