The Pressure (outro) Blues & Soul album review By Bob Killbourne, Editor, Blues & Soul 'The Liberty quintet got off to a pretty good start as winners of Capital Radios Young Band of the Year and their debut album, which has been on the streets for a few weeks now, shows sufficient promise and potential to warrant more than a casual glance. Theyre British and theyre funky with more than a passing nod to all manner of funk icons: Clinton and the P-funk thang, JB and Prince all cast their shadows on this debut set which is written, performed and co-produced by da boyz hand in hand with Byron Byrd (who I believe was a member of the 70s funk group Sun). The thrust is funk and nothing but funk whether it be the straight ahead rock funk of Paranoid; the hard-edged She Is Funk; the controlled funk ballad Destiny and the more gentle Simple Melody and the Teddy Riley-inspired My Girl (which, complete with new remixes will be the albums first offshoot in a couple of weeks). Elsewhere, the funk enters raw and tuff territory on Who Is She? and Paramix with the final The Pressure cut easing the listener down gently whilst still resting on a bed of funk grooves. Yes, its contemporary, yes it stands on its own merits and yes, its British. No Liberty takers here.' --------------------------- Blues & Soul 'Who Is She?' single review (taken from the album) By Mark Webster, Blues & Soul "Popular live UK band who have got that modern US R&B thing down very nicely indeed transfer effortlessly to vinyl for this, their debut single. The groove is a thoroughly contemporary, swinging-style thing but where this really makes its point so eloquently is in the fine, catchy tune and the great use of lead and harmony singing. It is slick, intricate stuff that would gall in lesser hands but these chaps have all the skill and confidence to make it happen. Sounds like a million dollars and I use that currency pointedly." -------------------------- Chris Philips on Kiss FM Commenting on the 'Who Is She?' single (taken from the album) I know it sounds almost degrading to British music but its hard to believe that is a British production, a British tune. It sounds so contemporary American..a wicked, wicked British band. -------------------------- Dave Gregory on Jazz FM Commenting on the 'Who Is She?' single (taken from the album) First British band Ive heard make that kind of sound in a long time, period I think.they are going to be big. -------------------------- Wilber Willberforce album review The funk is back in a big way thanks to Liberty whos new CD is jam packed with it." -------------------------- Jasper the Vinyl Junkie on Choice FM Commenting on the 'Who Is She?' single (taken from the album) British funk doing the business. If you dont like this youre mad. -------------------------- |
