| Valor The Making of a Super-Hero... John Marshall was born in Washington D.C., renowned as the "murder capital of the world". A bastard child with no father, and his mother on welfare, John was unable to fit in with the predominate black neighborhood children. Routinely beaten and ridiculed as "whitey cracker-boy", John dreamed of the day he would escape the concrete jungle he resided in. Deciding school was his best hope, John hit the books, all the while the kids on his block continued to harass him. Getting tired of the daily beatings, John turned to the toughest boy in school, Carl "Crusher" Creel. Carl, who was renowned as a bully, agreed to look after John as long as his homework was being done. Eventually, John became a part of "Crusher's Crew", assisting in many of the school yard rackets. He aided in extorting milk moneys, egging school buss drivers, and was even involved in the "Great grade point shaving of '82". As a sophomore at Willshire High school, he was already the most popular, if not notorious, kid in school. This incurred many changes within the school, the gang, and within John himself. John's popularity threatened Carl's security as leader of the crew. Carl was no longer the most popular, even though his opponent was unproven in school yard brawls. To this extent, Carl felt that a fight would be to his best bet to retain his legitimacy as leader. Even though he was jealous of John, he still liked him, making this decision a difficult one to make. O.K., maybe not that difficult. When word got out about the challenge, it spread like wild fire through the schools halls, and classes. Money was wagered by students on a betting line set up by Carl's insiders, Carl by knock out within 30 seconds, 6:1 odds. John learned of his upcoming fight in Calculus class. "Hey," Frank leaned over to John, "I heard about your fight." "What fight?" he replied sarcastically. "You and Carl" Frank became a little excited, and showed it by raising his voice so every student without could hear "on the Football field after school!" "Mr. Thomas!" Mrs. Brooks exclaimed sternly, "Please save the discussion for after class." "I can't wait for you to kick his ass." Frank continued in a whisper, "He's due a real whopper of an ass whippin'. You know what? I don't think he's ever gotten his ass kicked. He even beat his own dad up!" Concerned was the best way to describe how John felt about his uneasy situation. The last three classes would feel like forever, but ultimately, there was no turning back. His success was his undoing. From all directions, students, and teachers alike quizzed John like a prefight interview. How are you going to win? Will you use any weapons? Do you have a gun? Will you even show up? In his last class, he was called to the office by his councilor, who educated him on school health benefits and premium life insurance rates. Upon returning to his Government class, he noted that there where but three minutes left of school. Students and Facility gathered on the bleachers for optimum viewing to watch the carnage. Carl, at the 50 yard line had removed his jacket and begun his prefight ritual of cracking every knuckle individually, starting from the pinky of the left hand, and ending with the pinky on the right hand. The crowd parted for John's entrance, and cheers accompanied a prefight analysis with Ahmad Rashad and Bob Costas. Wasting no time, Carl charged shoulder first into him, causing both combatants to tumble entangled into the ground. Struggling for supremacy, It was John who gained the upperhand, straddling Carl from above swinging furiously into his face and chest. Carl protected himself the best he could, but to both of their disbelief, John seemed to grow stronger and meaner with each strike, making it clearly obvious to the spectators that Carl was in real trouble. The last blow delivered by John prompted spectators to intervene before Carl was killed. John knew at that time that something about him was different than normal folks. He suffered absolutely no fatigue, and felt like he was in the best condition of his life. Another spectator in the crowd who heard of the upcoming fight witnessed John's abnormal victory via remote sensors, and became very interested in training him to become a Field Lieutenant of his forces. The Taskmaster. One night, the Taskmaster sent his forces to John Marshall's house, with the intention of kidnapping. He was to be brought before Taskmaster, and offered wealth and power in exchange for hard work, sweat, and the finest training on the planet. Dozens of heavily outfitted goons stormed the residence, blazing Spike, and Bud, his favorite Chiwawas, before apprehending John with a sleep gas. Awaking on a cold sheet steel floor, John found himself confronted by the Taskmaster, who made his offer. John trained personally under the Taskmaster, who quickly became his star pupil. Taskmaster honed his reflexes, stamina, and combat instincts into a capable weapon. His strength surge baffled Taskmasters best contracted Scientists. It would appear that his powers would derive from a mutant gene from his DNA, but all tests gave no indication of the X - factor gene. By default, it was believed that somewhere through his adolescent childhood, he was altered by a rare radiation. Evidence of a high RAD count within John made him extremely susceptible to radiation sickness. John was his top henchman, and worked for Taskmaster under the guise "Vandal". Most of the missions in which he took part in were flawless, except the last. The last mission, before his capture, was to infiltrate S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Top Secret headquarters in Langley, Virginia. A mix-up in orders and failed communication enabled Guardian armored troops to engulf Vandal deep within the headquarters, with no hope for escape. Captured and convicted, John was visited by Dum-Dum Dungan, who ran a background check on him and learned of his positive work ethic. Dum-Dum, convinced that John could be turned from villainy, talked Col. Fury into a plea bargain agreement, which would enlist John as an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. Under his new callsign "Valor", Vandal's death was staged. During his tenure as a member of S.H.I.E.L.D.s elite super hero forces, Valor was doped out. |
