LOCK-ON
The Origin of Lock-On

On February 3, 1965, Jethro Thompson Woolworth was born into a lower middle class family with a solid family background. His father, stern and rugged, supported his family as a garbage collector in Baltimore, Maryland. His mother was a house maker, who took care of Jesse Case, his older brother, and Jennifer Mary, his younger sister. Jethro was a quiet young man who never exerted his emotions to many people, thus often considered distant. Very responsible and bright, Jethro skated through the public school system into high school with promising marks, continually improving as high school progressed.

As a senior in High School, Jethro was named a Salutatorian, and awarded a scholarship for academic and athletic excellence, lettering in Football as a Quarterback. Heavily recruited, Jethro was offered positions at Michigan, Notre Dame, and UCLA, to name a few. Jethro had his eyes and heart set on "The Big Apple" though, surprising many when he chose St. Johns University in New York.  While at St. Johns, Jethro led his football team to their best season start since the schools' inception. Even though Woolworth was a rookie, he was setting records on and off the field. Records for academic achievement, records set as a Quarterback, and records set by the New York Highway patrol, for most consecutive tickets given for excessive speeds.

Preparation for Alabama's football team meant a prior conditioning practice to fine tune plays from the offensive coordinator. After a snap from the center, Jethro pulled back in the pocket, scanning the field for an open receiver. A split second later, the lights went out. Fred McCallistor, number 13 of the reserve team, blindsided Jethro during a blitz, hitting him from the back, helmet first. Weighing in at about 315 pounds of pure muscle, the team became silent as Fred got up taunting the downed Quarterback. Jethro didn't move. Rushed to New York General Trauma, Doctors learned that not only was this injury career ending, but also life threatening. Major reconstruction of his spinal cord at the base of the brain was his only chance of survival. His chances of survival were slim.

"So, how's it goin?" Coach Hayden Fox asked his recovering player, Woolworth. His player was obviously in tremendous pain, as his chest and skull were completely wrapped in bandages, resulting from surgery on his entire nervous system. The room was well lit by large windows showing the warmth and energy of the outdoors.

"Okay, I guess," Jethro muttered back, lost in his own anguish. Moving his hand to his chest, he realized that at least he was not a quadriplegic. What a promising thought.

"We lost," Coach Fox said. "In fact, it seems we can't win without you."

"My football career is over, isn't it?" Jethro asked.

"Not really," Fox said optimistically. "You could always, well, give words of encouragement. I've got some news that uh, it's hard for me. Two nights ago during your surgery, your family was killed in a gas explosion. Police say they were asleep when it happened, even though bodies were never recovered. Some blast, huh? I mean, they must have been really blown out of that house! Think abou...."

"Hey, I get the picture, Coach! If I'm ever released from this day care center, I'll give you a call. Until that time, Woolworth was just a thing of the past." Jethro retorted.

"Look, I really gotta run, we have another game to play. Hey, good luck, son." Fox laid down his flowers on the counter next  to the medical bed, and left. Jethro continued to gaze through the window for the remainder of the day.

On Sunday, Jethro had mastered the motor skills of his hands and arms, all the while, plagued with headaches and flashbacks of the hit delivered upon him, seemingly from different aspects and angles.  He reached for the attendant alarm to request refreshments; Ho - Ho's and Cappuccino was his personal favorites. Depressing the button, an ominous hydraulic sound erupted, and the electrically powered bed sprung to a right angle with enormous force, propelling Jethro out of the window. Tumbling four stories to his death, Jethro naturally twisted into a spiral during mid freefall, and landed solidly on his two feet upon concrete with only a slight bend in his knees. At that precise moment, he observed that no one had noticed this amazing feet, or the fact that he was even shot out of his bed!

During the course of several weeks, Jethro had transferred out of St. Johns and into Syracuse University, and revisited what he once called home. While his senses where not as keen as they now are, even Jethro could not detect whether his family was truly within the explosion. Living on the scholarship guaranteed him college tuition, even in the event of injury, so Jethro focused on Business and Finance, and the development of his newly acquired powers through his own secret tuition. During this time, Jethro had decided to integrate  Business with Heroism. Although this was not a unique idea, the aspect of franchising Public hero teams was. The Avengers were Government sponsored, the X-Men were secretive, and Luke Cage / Iron Fist were local small fry. There was a large corporate hole to be filled. Jethro decided to get experience from the best as a hero, and although unknown to the world, filed for a position with the Avengers, East Coast. Screened heavily, Captain America happily informed him that he was accepted by all current members, and he scored 97.5% on the initial exam, a new high score. It was with the Avengers when Jethro was named Lock-On, by Captain America, during a threat assessment of the Masters of Evil.

During a mission, Lock-On met Joe Reeder, also known as Mr. Independence, who persuaded him to gather a group of heroes together which would satisfy his original plan. Lock-On leading, first members included Mr. Independence, Torch Burner, Assassin, Shadow, and Vogue. Somewhat successful, the group eventually disband and went on their way. Joe, his closest friend he has ever had, retired after being mutilated by the entity known as Fafnir.

Lock-On never lost focus of his original plan, and since then, had replaced that group with another, though not as a direct leader. This group, named Liberty Force, had made its mark in history by foiling attempts of world domination by such madmen as Dr. Doom, and The Dictator of Decimation Corp. Although the roster is changing constantly, the founders include Recon, the leader, Lock-On, the funder, Valor, and Captain Purity.
