Why Hemp, whats all the fuss about a little ol weed ?  Ok so it can get you high, so what....why ban the whole plant and all its uses simply cos it can get you high ?
The answer to that for anyone who dosnt know yet, is simply because of its many uses competing with big business interests.....Hemp is a sustainable crop, can be grown almost anywhere, is hardy and can replace almost every single non-sustainable industry the world has.....It was used for clothing from our most ancient beginings, it was also used as medicine since the begining of time....In short, HEMP could be the biggest thing since sliced bread.....but alas, big business does not like competition, and so HEMP, was baned in almost all parts of the globe.  This was not the case in earlier times, and  as more people begin to see through the lies of history, it will be again.

The plants offical Latin name is Cannabis Sativa, from the Greek Kannabis. The double name was first listed in 60AD by Dioscorides, in his De Materia Medica. The Egyptians made a hieroglyph of a coiled up piece of hemp rope that went through the Semitic and Greek characters to the Romans, who adapted it into the letter H. When modern languages began to develop, these two ancient symbols for the plant merged into the French Chanvre and German Hanf, forming through the Dutch HENNEP into Old English HOENEP where it turned first into HEMPE and finally as we know it todady HEMP.

From ancient times to contemporary, HEMP has alwasy been part of our history.  Cuneiform descriptions of cannabis that were found in a Babylonian library dated 650BC are generaly regarded as obvious copies of much older texts and project the origin of the plant back to our earliest beginnigs
Herodotus, tells us of one of it many uses from ancient times...After a burial, those involved have to purify themselves, which they do in this way....First they soap and wash their heads, then to cleanse their bodies they make a tent tightly covered with felt.  Inside a dish is placed with red hot stones and some HEMP seeds.  The seeds are thrown on to the hot stones which sends up such billows of steam and smoke that no Greek vapour bath can surpass it....
Plutarch wrote that....Thracians threm HEMP tops which looked like oregano into the fires after their meals, inhaled the fumes deeply, became drunk and finally fell asleep ?!
Sooooo....our early ancestors inhaled cannabis ! and today in our overly moralistic society we have made it illegal.  However it was made illegal not because of its THC properties..it was made illegal because of vested bussiness interests.  Yes dear friends, the collusion of politics, media and big business made the growing of HEMP illegal way back in the late 1930s......The potential of HEMP was far more affordable and much more valuable than fossil fuels or even timber.  Valuable HEMP fibre meant that HEMP could become a most profitable and desirable crop....Popular Mechanics dubbed HEMP the new billion dollar crop and predicted a bonaza for farmers and industry alike.  And when Rudolph Diesel produced his famous engine in 1896, he assumed it would be powered by a variety of fuels, especially vegetable and seed oils, not unusal given that vegatable oils had been the first source of fuel.  Like most engineers of the day Mr Diesel realised that vegetable fuels like HEMP  are superior to petroleum.  This was immediately perceived as a threat by the petrochemical company Du Pont....and here the collusion begins.....
Du Pont had as its major finacial backer, key political ally, oil man and treasury secretary Andre Mellon, whose nephew in law was to become none other than Harry J Anslinger, the head of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics.  Through careful bureaucratic control of both legislation and enforcement, the hydrocarbon interests achievd market supremecy by turning a blind eye to the poisions generated by industrial hydrocarbons, while imposing extreme obstacles on natural carbohydrates, supposedly because the latter cause physical pleasure.

The Hearst newspaper/timber interests had supported the petrochemical campaign agains HEMP and together they generated enough confusion and hysteria in the public mind, to ram a marijuana prophibition bill through congress in less than three months.  Williaom Randolph Hearst was also a man of power and influence, his company was a major consumer of cheap tree pulp paper.  His news paper chain stretched across the nation and had already demonstrated its power to influence public opinion and federal policy shown by its biased reports on Cuba, spawning the expressions  yellow journalism. The Hearst newspaper chain was known for sensational stories and prohibiton politics, and Hearst despiesd poor people, African Americans, Chinese Hindus and all minorities.  In particular he hated Mexicans, especially since their revolutionaly hero Pancho Villas troops had reclaimed some 800,000 acres of prime timberland in Mexico from Hearst, in the name of the peasants.  Actualy It was because of this that Hearst plucked the name Marijuana from a Mexican drinking song after Pancho Villas men sang it to celebrate their 1913 victory in reclaiming the land from Hearst,
from there on it the role of marijuana in the media was either assumed, exaggerated or directly fabricated.

Meanwhile Du Ponts ally, oil man and US Treasurer Andrew Mellon along with nephew in laww, Harry J Anslinger were soon in prime positions to pass any bill they liked especially with the help of Hearsts bigoted and prohibitionist newspaper.  Thus we have
three major sources of collusion, Industry, Media and Politics....sound familar anyone ?

And so in 1937 Anslinger went before the poorly attended Congressional committee hearings and called for a total cannabis ban stating under oath...
Opium has all the good of Dr Jeckyll and all the evil of Mr Hyde....this drug is entirely the monster of Hyde, the harmful effects of which cannot be measured. The Act was a single bill that passed through congress in just 10 weeks without a roll call vote.  Later analysis of the Act described it as ...near comic example of dereliction of legislative responislbity a case study in legilative carelesness....Background to this Bill were two powerful rivals, faced off over several multi-billion dollar markets...Petroleum and Timber vs HEMP.

Of course there was resistance.  But for many the concocted name mjarijuana, rather than its real and common name of cannabis confused and delayed the connection between the legitmate HEMP business.  Co incidently, that same year, 1937, Du Pont filed its patent on nylon, a synthetic fibre that took over many textile and cordage markets that normally would have gone to HEMP.  Furthermore, all GM cars would be designed to use tetra-ethyl leaded fuel exclusively wich contained chemical additives that Du Pont naufactured.  Finally, the guliable public attitude toward the cannabis user changed overnight once they became a so called criminal.  The activity that had been merely a pleasant pastime used by almost all cultures in the world form ancient times in both religous and social practises was now percieved to be a moral pestilence, a plague that destroyed the spirit and left the body to rot

Well we all know that it dosnt of course, but the furtile and often guliable mind of the public beleives in the voice of authority sooooo the HEMP industry was effectively stopped and Cannabias was made illegal.  However Today many countries around the world currently grow Industrail HEMP, including those who have grown since antiquity, such as China, France, Spain, India, Romania, Hungary, North Korea, Russia and the Ukraine.  Other countries have only recently begun researchiing a hemp industry.  England began in 1993, Holland and Germany in 1995, Canada in 1994 and Australia, in 1990.

Many of the countries that followed the US  like sheep in banning industrail HEMP because of the irrational fears of marijuana implications have recently changed their legislation to again allow production and crops grown in these countries have NOT spawned major drug problems.

Througout our  history HEMP has played a vital role in civilisations development and indications are that it could do so again.  With an estimated 50,000 products now being manufactured, including clothes, tents, linens, rugs, drapes, bed sheets, towels, paper, shoes, soaps, oils, cremes and even carpet.  Not to mention wood for timber, insulation materials concrete and plastic subsitutes,

We can replace all the toxic non renewable resources which effect our quality of life and the wellbeing of Gaia.
