Insha Allah this is an attempt to educate the general Muslim about Liberal Islam and its danger!!! Let us make du'a for Allah to help us in this noble effort.

Introduction

In these challenging times there have been a number of liberal movements within Islam (sometimes called 'interpretation-based Islam', 'Progressive Islam', and/or also 'Modernist Islam'). These generally denote religious outlooks that Liberal Muslims interpret the Al Qur'an and Al Hadith from their personal perspective rather than the traditional Muslim point of view. Liberals generally claim that they are returning to the principals of the early Muslim community, arguing that the traditionalist or the fundamentalist have diverged from true Islam through their focus on the literal word rather than the ethical intent of scripture and are usually secularist in nature.

Rand Corporation proposed to the US Government to help promote these ideas (Cheryl Benard - Civil Democratic Islam) to fight against the fundamental and traditional Islamic movements worldwide. Among the proposals are: providing funds to support their activities, providing them public platform, make their opinions and judgments on fundamental questions of religious interpretation available to a mass audience in competition with those of the fundamentalists and traditionalists, position secularism and modernism as a "counterculture" option for disaffected Islamic youth, facilitate and encourage an awareness of their pre- and non-Islamic history and culture, assist in the development of independent civic organizations (NGOs).

Rand also recommended US Government to confront and oppose the fundamentalists by (among others) challenging their interpretation of Islam and expose inaccuracies, demonstrate their inability to rule, to achieve positive development of their countries and communities, and encourage divisions among fundamentalists.

Among these organizations are Liberal Islam Network (Indonesia), Sisters-in-Islam (Malaysia),

Among the well known figures who profess the ideas are:

Indonesia - Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur), Nurcholish Madjid, Ahmad Wahib, dan Djohan Efendi

Malaysia - Astora Jabat, Chandra Muzaffar and Zainahh Anwar

USA - Amina Wadud

South Africa - Farid Esack

Sudan - Abdullahi An-Na`im

India - Ali Asghar Engineer

Bangladesh - Taslima Nasrin

(... and a few more others to be added on later)

Do not be surprise that Liberal Islam (ideas, movements and individuals) are being strongly supported by the fundamentalist Christian movements and Christian-interest groups. Among them  Rand Corporation, Asia Foundation, Pathfinders Fund, Ford Foundation, Konrad Adenauer Foundation and Soros Foundation,  These organizations had known to have and continuously either provided monetary and/or moral support.

Pengenalan

Mixed-Gender Prayer Led By D. Amina Wadud

The First Muslim Woman on Record to Lead Mixed-Gender Prayer

On Friday, March 18, 2005, Dr. Amina Wadud, professor of Islamic studies at Virginia Commonwealth University, will be the first woman to lead a public, mixed-gender Friday prayer. She will also deliver the Friday sermon. Dr. Wadud, the author of the groundbreaking book Qur'an and Woman: Rereading the Sacred Text from a Woman's Perspective, is an esteemed scholar of Islam who affirms the right of Muslim women to be prayer leaders

Larangan kawin beda agama, dalam hal ini antara perempuan Islam dengan lelaki non-Islam, sudah tidak relevan lagi.”

- Ulil Abshar Abdalla (Indonesia)

(Forbidding inter-religious marriage, in the case of Muslim women with non-Muslim man, is no longer relevant)

"Orthodoxy (indeed all medieval thought) lacked the intellectual capacity to say that the Quran is entirely the Word of God and, in an ordinary sense, also entirely the word of Muhammad."
