Winter Woes

By Ti Lian Siew

Grumble, mumble... when oh when will the sun shine in Perth again?

IT'S winter in Perth right now and it seems to go on forever. People in Perth try to forget that they have winter. Their houses are built for summer and they just suffer through the winter months (May to August, give or take a few weeks). For example, take the house I'm staying in. There's no heating. And the house has so many ventilation holes - which was a blessing in summer - but really torturous right now. We wake up in the morning feeling frostbitten.

My housemate Josefina is from Sweden. In Sweden, it's cold all the time. Polar bears roam the streets in the city (nah, just kidding!). But in the houses, it's warm and cosy. The average temperature is about 30 degrees celcius. You only have to wear your knickers when you're vacuuming the carpet. Everything is built to withstand winter.

But I digress. I was talking about winter in Perth. Well, there's no snow here. But it can get windy and rainy. When the two elements combine, it gets really miserable.

The worst part of the day is:

No wonder bears just give up and hibernate!

Perth is well known for its wonderful climate. But right now, the weather sucks. And if you're thinking of visiting, well, don't say I didn't warn ya!
