Salzburg
On the banks of the Salzach River, Salzburg is known as the birthplace of Mozart and the setting for The Sound of Music. Apparently, there is going to be a big celebration in 2006 for the 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth year. They're going to open up a new museum and everything.

There are some nice museums, art galleries, concerts, and fine restaurants in Salzburg. But I, not being in the mood for museums or classical music (and not rich enough for some of the shopping), mostly walked around and enjoyed the sights.

Festung Hohensalzburg sits atop the hill overlooking the town; there are some great views from up there. And a marionette museum. There is a tram you can ride to get up to the fortress, or you can be a trooper and walk up the hill, like I did.
Hotel Am Dom is a neat pension-style hotel in the middle of the Altstadt near one of the main squares. Prices are incredibly affordable (well, I did travel during the "off" season, but it's still cheaper than other hotels in the area) and the rooms are rather nice and quaint. The owner is very friendly and will even arrange tours for guests, if they so desire.
My room - small, but lots of character

St. Peter's Cemetery is near the tram to get up to the fortress. I went early in the morning and it was very quiet and peaceful.

If the Mirabell Gardens look familiar to you, you're probably know with The Sound of Music (although I can't say I recall this part of the movie).

By the time I got here, the day was getting a little warm, so I didn't walk around it that much. A Punjab-Austrian man mistook me for an Indian. Even though he seemed "nice," I declined his offer to show me around the city.
