In a Salem jail cell, Sarah Good and Tituba awaited hanging. Parris told Danforth that Abigail vanished with Mercy Lewis and took his strongbox. He suggested Danforth to postpone the hanging, but Danforth refused. Hale asked Elizabeth to counsel Proctor to lie and save himself, she balked but agreed to see Proctor. Alone with Proctor, Elizabeth forgave him and blamed herself for not being able to love him enough. She cannot counsel him to lie and instead told him to make his own decision and to be his own judge. Proctor confessed to being a witch, but stopped at indicting Rebecca and anybody else. Danforth demanded that Proctor sign the document. Proctor said he had confessed to God, and that was enough. Danforth ordered Proctor to be hanged. Hale begged Elizabeth to plead with Proctor to sign a confession, but Elizabeth stated that Proctor had his goodness now, and God forbid that she takes it from him.
