In the Salem meeting house
that serves as the general court, Danforth and Hathorne were judging Martha
Corey. John Proctor Francis Nurse, and
Giles Corey present their cases to Deputy Governor Danforth and Judge Hathorne. Corey charged Putnam was
inciting his daughter to accuse a townsman’s land. Corey witness to support the
charge, but he refused to name him. Therefore, he was arrested for contempt of
court. John told Danforth that Mary Warren never saw any spirits, and he
presented a deposition signed by Mary that asserted this. Danforth told John
that his wife is pregnant, she will live another year so that she may deliver. Later,
Proctor submitted a deposition signed by 91 citizens attesting to the good
opinion of the men’s wives. He ordered Mary to tell Danforth how the girls
danced in the woods naked. He called Abigail a whore, the he admitted that he
had an affair with Abigail. Danforth asked Elizabeth the true, but Elizabeth
wanted to save Proctor’s name, so she said that Proctor never committed
lechery. But in so doing destroyed the
charge against Abigail. Then Proctor was accused of being a witch. Abigail claimed she saw Mary’s
spirit came out and tried to hurt her. Mary was afraid of Abigail; she turned
her back to Abigail against Proctor. At last, Hale denounced the proceedings
and quitted the court.
