Rewrite the scene in court where John Proctor, Mary Warren and Elizabeth Proctor are questioned by Judge Danforth from the point of view of John Hale in a monologue. Let him reflect on what happened and describe how he feels about the trial, which eventually leads to him decision of quitting the court at the end of Act III.
I was in the court today.
I heard all the answers that Judge Danforth asked John Proctor, Marry Warren
and Elizabeth Proctor. From what they said and the messages that I have gotten
these days, I believe there is nothing to do with witchcraft gradually. There
are so many people are accused by the girls in Salem. Even Rebecca was charged.
I knew she is such a nice person, she is not a witch, and I believe she is
innocent. I remember John had told me that children’s sickness had naught to do
with witchcraft when I was in his house. Also, John confessed that he had an
affair with Abigail in the court today. I believe what he said. I do not think
a man will cast away his good name for lie. From what Elizabeth said in the
court, I think she just wanted to save her husband John’s name. Now, I realize
what the girls did before, they are gone wild. I grow disillusioned with the
witchcraft accusation that abound and defends Proctor when he challenges
Abigail. I did this to a great degree out of guilt, for I fear that I may have
caused the execution of innocent persons. Unfortunately, they believed what the
girls said. I was angry. I denounced the proceedings and then quitted the
court.
