Task IV
William Jennings Bryan “Destiny is not a matter of chance, it is a matter of choice.” In my opinion, this sentence means life is absolute control by ourselves, nobody can decide for us except ourselves. It doesn’t relate with chance. I agree with this statement.
In the story “The Crucible” which was written by Arthur Miller, it tells readers how John Proctor chose his destiny. At first, he would get a chance to live if he signed the confession, but John Proctor didn’t sign it. This is the choice he made. He chose to die to save his soul and his name. He thought he confessed himself was a witch that was enough. He preferred his name to his life. This was John Proctor’s choice. He was hanged later was his destiny. It was the result of his choice.
The other literature work that it is support this statement is “The History of a Campain that Failed”. It was written by Mark Twain. In this story, people chose war to solve their problems, the result must by pitiful. People need to kill each other for no reasons because they are your foes. This is a result from war. Without war, people might don’t have such miserable destinies, they might live peaceful. This is the destiny because thy choose war.
In the story “The Crucible”, it uses dialogue to tell the readers how John Proctor’s destiny develop from his choice. It also uses characterization to describe what kind of person John Proctor is. From this description we can know why John Proctor made that kind of destiny. In “The History of a Campain that Failed”, the author uses foreshadow to tell the readers how the people’s destinies develop from their choices.
Based on the materials that talked above, we can know what kinds of destines come from what kinds of choices. Destiny is not a matter of chance, it is a matter of choice.
