| 20/03 Tanika Liburd (of Nevis) placed first in the Long Jump at the Alabama relays, smashing the St. Kitts/Nevis National Record with a leap of 6.22m (20ft 5ins), surpassing her previous personal best of 19' 4". That distance is equivalent to 20th place in the 2003 Caribbean and Central American (CAC) Rankings. She should now be the top ranked Long Jumper in the Leeward Islands, and possibly in the OECS (to be checked). Tanika qualifies for the NCAA Regional Championships and also for the NACAC Under 23 Championship, scheduled for Sherbrooke, Canada. Tanika will also compete in the 4x100m relay on Sunday 21st. | 06/03 (Updated 13/3) Tanika Liburd (of Nevis) broke 2 personal records in the Long Jump and 100m, at the University of Southern Mississippi's Outdoor meet, held March 6th. She finished 3rd in a best time of 11.78 in the 100 meters, an NCAA qualifying Outdoor mark. She also finished 1st in the Long Jump at 19�4� (5.89m), 1" off the National Record of 5.91m (Isis Peets 1995), and 2" off the NCAA Regional qualifying Outdoor standard. Both performances were her best ever in those events. She should now be qualified as the No. 2 Long Jumper in Conference USA. Tanika and her teammates from the University of Southern Mississippi won the 4x100m in 46.03s. Tanika ran her personal best in the 100m almost immediately after competing in the 4x100m event. | 14/15 May 2004 CONFERENCE USA CHAMPIONSHIP Tanika Liburd of Nevis won the coveted Long Jump GOLD medal at the "Conference USA Championships", with a jump of 19 feet 9.5 ins. Tanika catapulted from 4th to 1st in her final jump of the competition.The meet was held this weekend at Cardinal Park Stadium at the University of Louisville, Kentucky. Tanika was ranked No. 1 coming into the meet with a best distance and the St. Kitts & Nevis National Record of 20' 5". 1. Tanika Liburd Southern Miss 6.03m NWI 19-09.50 2. Lissie Mo Tulane 5.78m NWI 18-11.75 Tanika Liburd is currently ranked No. 4 in the Mid-West Division and No. 18 in the United States National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division 1. She will be competing in the Regional Championships on 28/29th May, and will qualify for the National Championships, scheduled for June 9-12 in Texas, if she places in the first five positions. Tanika started her collegiate career in January of this year at the University of Southern Mississippi (U-Miss) where is majoring in Psychology, with a possible minor in Accounting or Business Management. She won "ATHLETE OF THE WEEK" honours in Conference USA in March, for her superlative leap of 20' 5. Tanika becomes the first U-Miss athlete to win the women's Long Jump at the Conference Championships. Conference USA consists of the following schools: South Florida, Houston, Tulane, Southern Miss, Cincinnati, Louisville, DePaul, Marquette, Charlotte, TCU, Memphis, East Carolina, Army, St. Louis and UAB. Tanika Liburd is currently the premier long jumper in the Leeward Islands and one of the best in the OECS. She is also a very talented netballer, winning the coveted Most Valuable Player Award at the Under-23 OECS/ECCB Netball Championships. Tanika is the daughter of Andy Liburd and Glenis Challenger of Nevis. The Nevis and the Leeward Islands Athletic Association, wishes to congratulate Tanika on her achievement. | 20-21/02/04 Tanika Liburd (of Nevis & the University of Southern Mississippi - USM) had a mixed performance at the LSU Twilight Invitational Meet in Louisiana. She placed second in Heat #3 of the 60m in a personal best time of 7.71s (11th overall out of 36), and just missed qualifying for the finals. Her 60m time places her 12th in "Conference USA". She also jumped a distance of 5.03m (16ft 6ins), while attempting to "bail out" of the jump, and fouled on her 2 other attempts. | 14/02/04 Tanika Liburd (of Nevis & the University of Southern Mississippi - USM) had a superb performance at the Middle Tennessee State University - Valentine Invitational Meet. Tanika placed second in the Long Jump with a distance of 5.71m (18ft 9 ins), just 6cm or 2 ins below her personal best. She also performed well in the 55m event, placing 2nd in Heat # 3 of 4, with a time of 7.22s - the 6th best time in the preliminaries. In the Finals, Tanika placed 5th with a time of 7.25s. Tanika's performance was, for the 2nd week, the best in the meet for her University, in both the sprint event and the Long Jump. She now ranks 1st in the 55m at USM and has established a new best for 2004 in the Long Jump. Her Long Jump mark places her in the top five in "Conference USA". This was her third meet of the Indoor season. Tanika's next meets will be the LSU Indoor Invitational at Baton Rouge, Louisiana on 20th Feb, followed by the Conference USA Championships in Houston, Texas on 26/27 February. | 08/02/04 HOUSTON RESULTS Five athletes from Nevis and St. Kitts competed in the Houston Indoor Invitational, in Houston, Texas on Saturday 7th February, hosted by the University of Houston. Tanika Liburd (of Nevis & the University of Southern Mississippi) had a exceptional meet, placing first in the Long Jump with a distance of 5.56m (18ft 3 ins), defeating 25 fellow competitors in the "B" section. In the 60m event, Tanika also performed well, placing 2nd in Heat # 3 (out of 12 heats) with a time of 7.82s and 23rd overall out of 81 competitors. Tanika's performance was the best in the meet for her University in both the 60m and Long Jump. She now ranks 2nd in the 60m (behind Tori Wells - 7.80s) and 1st in the Long Jump, for the University of Southern Mississippi. These marks should place Tanika in the top 20 in the 60 metres and in the top ten in the Long Jump, for the school's conference - "Conference USA". | 31/01/04 Tanika Liburd competed in her first ever collegiate meet in the Louisiana State University (LSU) Bayou Bengal Invitational, held on Friday 30th January. Tanika placed a somewhat disappointing 14th place, with a distance of 5.18m or 17ft, well below her personal best of 5.77m or 18ft 11ins. Tanika however, will be expected to improve significantly in her next meet, given that this is her second week at the University of Southern Mississippi. Nicole Toney of Louisiana State University won the event with a distance of 5.97m or 19ft-07in. Atanna Alexander and Bejide Williams, both of Louisiana Tech, placed 2nd and 3rd. | 18/01/2004 National athlete, Tanika Liburd of Nevis, left the Federation on Sunday morning (18th Jan) to attend the University of Southern Mississippi, a Division I school. Miss Liburd was offered and accepted, a full Track and Field scholarship by the University, which is situated in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. She plans to major in Psychology, with a possible minor in Accounting or Business Management. Tanika Liburd is a premier sprinter/long jumper in the Leeward Islands and has competed and won awards in a variety of meets, including the TDC/Coca-Cola Interschool Championships (Senior Champion in 2001), Leeward Islands Championships in Tortola, BVI Invitational, Whitsuntide Games in Grenada, "Festival Olympico" and "Frankie Colon Games" in Puerto Rico, OECS Championships in Grenada and more. Tanika Liburd is also a very talented netballer winning the coveted Most Valuable Player Award at the Under-23 OECS/ECCB Netball Championships, held in Nevis on 18 - 22 June 2003. Tanika was the Captain of the Nevis team, which was narrowly beaten by Grenada into second place. She was a notch above the other players in the competition, displaying her athletic abilities and netball savvy, and was a leader by example for her teammates. | 27 July - 2003 Frankie Colon Games Tanika Liburd of Nevis won the Long Jump bronze medal at the 2003 Frankie Colon Games held on Saturday July 26, 2003 at Ponce, Puerto Rico. Athletes from the St. Kitts team also performed well, with Kevin Arthurton and Virgil Hodge winning 200m Gold, and Delwayne Delaney winning Bronze in the 100m. The team used the meet as a warmup meet for the Pan American Games, to be held in Santo Domingo on August 5-9. |
| 30 June - Tanika Liburd and Kevon Pierre of Nevis excel at BVI Invitationals Tanika Liburd and Kevon Pierre of Nevis, won the most Outstanding Female and Male Athlete awards respectively, at the BVI Invitational Track and Field Meet, held at the Shirley Recreation Grounds, Tortola, on Sunday 29th June. Kevon Pierre won quadruple gold in the 100m (10.76s), 200m (21.9s), 400m (51.23s) and 4x100m relay, while Tanika Liburd won 3 gold medals in the 100m (12.47s), 200m (26.1s) and Long Jump (5.75m - 18 ft 10-1/4 in) - a new BVI All-Comers record and 2 cm off her personal best of 5.77m, set at the Frankie Colon Games held in 2001 in Puerto Rico. Significantly, this is Tanika's first meet of 2003, due to prior injuries. The future looks great for this daughter of the soil. 23 June Tanika Liburd won the coveted Most Valuable Player Award at the recently concluded Under-23 OECS/ECCB Netball Championships, held in Nevis on 18 - 22 June. Tanika was the Captain of the Nevis team which was narrowly beaten by Grenada into second place, Grenada winning by a better goal average. She was a notch above the other players in the competition, dispaying her athletic prowness and netball savvy, and was a leader from the front for her teammates. The amazing thing was she did not play any netball for three weeks before the competition, due to an ankle injury. Indeed an amazing feat by a talented athlete. |
