Eric Matthias' Profile

Eric Matthias takes a gold at 2003 Carifta Games  (from BVI beacon.com)

At 6 foot 8 inches tall and around 230 pounds, you may think Eric Matthias is a heavyweight boxer if you were to meet him on a dark night. But he is one of the tamest guys you can meet and to find him youll have to go on an athletics track where hell be throwing a discus rather than a punch.

After bringing home gold last year Matthias has repeated the feat, this year at the Carifta Games at the Hasley Crawford stadium in Trinidad. While thousands of Trinidadians where just a few miles down the road at the Queens Park Oval in Port a Spain watching the West Indies play Australia in cricket, Eric was busy throwing the discus. For the first time this year the 1.75 kilo discus was implemented which Eric threw 55.20 metres or 181.1 feet for a gold medal. It was poetry in motion for Eric who was actually not over pleased with the throw and felt he should have done better. In second place was Kimani Kirton of Jamaica with a throw of 51.25 metres.

Meanwhile in the shot putt, which is by no means one of his favourite events, Eric threw an impressive 15.36 metres or 50 feet 4 inches for fifth place. The fact that Eeric was only able to manage fifth place with such an impressive throw magnifies how competitive the Carifta games is and it also shows how impressive his gold medal in the discus is. The games standard is so high now, that the event is actually scheduled as one of the major junior track events in the world and the results are published world wide.
Eric Mathias adds Jr. College All America honors to rsum  May 2003 (from Islandsun.com)

By DEAN GREENAWAY

Eric Mathias who won the 2002 Central American and Caribbean Jr. Championships Discus, then won the same event at last months Carifta Games, earned Jr. College All America honors at the 2003 National Jr. College Athletic Association Championships, by helping Central Arizona College to an overall second place finish.

Central Arizona College finished seven points behind champions Barton Community Colleges 154 points, after amassing 147.
The Central Arizona College sophomore who will chose between Boise State and Mississippi State to further his studies, placed fourth overall in the Discus with a throw of 49.02 meters (16010). He was ranked fifth heading into championships.

We lost by seven points, because several of our athletes who were suppose to hold their own didnt, Mathias said. I was disappointed in the teams finish. I never cried so much since my grandmothers funeral.
Regarding his individual performance, Mathias said he put out what he had. On several occasions this season, he exceeded the winning throw of 160. I had the winning throw, but this one guy coughed out loud as I was about to throw and that just threw me off, he said. I wouldnt say it was a bad meet. It was, but, Im not making any excuses. Everyone that was expected to throw far didnt so thats why I accepted what happened.
Mathias said he feels good about earning All America honors, and his coach said he stepped up his performance this year. But deep inside, the thing that hurts the most is that 51 meters won nationals, he said. Thats what I opened up all my meets with.
Eric Mathias ends Carifta Games career with gold medal and record (from Islandsun.com)

BY DEAN GREENAWAY -  April 25, 2003

In Eric Mathias first trek to the Carifta Games in 2000, he went as a Shot Putter and won a bronze medal in the Under-17 Boys Discus with a throw of 131 feet.

After two disappointing fourth place finishes, Mathias ended his Carifta Games career at the 32nd Games in Trinidad Saturday, by winning the Boys Under-20 Discus with an outstanding 55.20 meters (181) throw. Mathias added the Carifta crown to last years CAC Junior title, while topping Dwayne Henclewood's three-year-old mark of 50.41 meters, (1654 ) by a whopping 4.79 meters (158 ).

The Central Arizona College sophomore led all three medalists above the previous Under-20 Discus mark, with Jamaica's Kimani Kirton taking second at 51.25 meters (1681) and Martinique's David Villeneuve, the 2002 Under-17 champion, third at 51.09 meters (1676). Mathias finished fifth in the Shot Put Monday with a heave of 15.36 meters (504). His winning throw in the Discus was the BVIs 11th Carifta Games medal.

I expected him to win fairly convincingly based on what he has been throwing out in Arizona since late last year, BVI Amateur Athletic Association president Rey ONeal said. In looking though the results from places like Trinidad, the Bahamas and Jamaica, I didnt think there was anyone who would be all that close. I my opinion, Eric would have had to beat himself. Fortunately that did not happen.
