Dion Crabbe off and running towards Olympic Games qualifying standard
(from Islandsun.com)

BY DEAN GREENAWAY  -  Jan 30, 2004

Sprinter Dion Crabbe ended his holiday, home cooking and home training this week to begin his 2004 track season with the ultimate goal of running in the Aug. 13-29 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. Crabbe who earned double All America honors in the 100 and 200 meters then won the 2002 Caribbean and Central American Games 100 meters, had his 2003 season cut short by injuries. Despite an injury plagued 2003, Crabbe doesn't see it as a low point in his career. "You have your mind set to compete at a certain level and the fact that you didn't get therefor example the World Championshipsit drives you a lot more," Crabbe said. "The fact that I had a chance to sit back and see exactly what the other guys were doing and know where I was pushes me a bit more."

Crabbe, a Mississippi State grad will only compete in the Tyson Invitational Fayetteville, Arkansas in March and in one other indoor meet. He would like to run more in the Caribbean as he chases Olympic Games 100 and 200 meter qualifying times of 10.28 and 20.71. He has 100 and 200 meter bests of 10.25 and 20.30. The latter was the 18th best time in the world in 2002.

The qualifying period for Crabbe, like all athletes who will represent their countries runs from Jan 1. 2003 to Aug. 9, 2004. Crabbe said running in the Caribbean is a big motivating factor. "To be able to come back to where you're from and represent the BVI in Grenada or St. Vincent or any other island is more than just a meet. It's like your country against theirs and that makes it more exciting," Crabbe noted. "A lot of people on Tortola see me walking around, but don't understand the amount of work it takes to get to where I am. But, I do like to come home because I get a lot of support. I would always come home before I compete at a big event just to hear some body say 'you got to lick in dem man you know.'"

Coach Dag Samuels said when Crabbe trains in the afternoons he sets a high standard for the other athletes. "He's not afraid to tell them 'listen, you are not doing what you are suppose to do' and I think they respect that," Samuels said. "A lot of them feel guilty if they know they are not doing the work and he's right there to motivate them. Not, only was I glad that he was at home to work with him sometimes, but he sets that standard for the other athletes to see and hopefully, get to that level in time."
Dion Crabbe debuts with Caribbean All-Stars at Penn Relays (from Islandsun.com)

BY DEAN GREENAWAY   -  May 2, 2003

After ending his collegiate career last month during the indoor season, sprinter Dion Crabbe ran his first outdoor race of the season Saturday, when he contributed a third leg carry that helped a Caribbean All-Stars team to a fourth place finish in the 4 x 200 meter relay at the 109th Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The Caribbean All-Stars team of Dominic Demeritte of the Bahamas, Jamaica's Chris Brown, Crabbe and St. Kitts' Kim Collins, ran in the prestigious USA vs. The World series at Penn, combining to clock a time of 1 minute 22.61 seconds, ranking behind the USA Red and Blue teams and Jamaica.

Saturday's run was the national double sprint record holder's first outdoor race since winning the CAC Games 100 meter gold in El Salvador in December. After his performance, Crabbe told Mississippi State University Sports Information Director Koby Padget he was not disappointed with his time.

"I felt really good about my time and was very happy that I closed the gap a little bit," he said in the release. "I'm going to get much better since this was my first race outdoors this year. It was just a privilege to be asked to run with the Caribbean All-Stars."

Crabbe is a former two-time all-American at Mississippi State who completed his collegiate career in March. He currently ranked fourth on MSU's all-time 200-meter dash outdoor list and tied for fifth on the 100-meter dash list.

He will represent the BVI at the CAC Championships in Grenada in July and the Pan American Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic in August followed by the World Championships in Paris, France later in August.
Dion Crabbe provisionally qualifies for NCAA Indoor Championships (from Islandsun.com)

By Dean Greenaway  - Jan 21, 2003

On the same track where the 2003 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships will be held on March 14-16, Dion Crabbe made provisional qualifying marks at the weekend Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

At midweek, Crabbe said he would run a qualifying time and did so on Friday. However, he must run faster to be assured of a trip to the championships. Last year, only the top 18 runners were invited and Crabbe had the 19th best time. A provisional mark means he will only go to the championships, based on the number of people who have met the automatic qualifying time of 20.85, and those ahead of him who has a faster provisional time.

The Mississippi State University Bulldogs senior equaled last year's career best in the 60-meter dash, after running 6.72 seconds in the preliminaries, before settling for fifth overall in the finals in 6.73 Friday. He would have to run 6.62 or faster to automatically qualify in the 60 meters.

Crabbe later clocked his 200 meter dash in a season's best 21.24, handing him a second provisional qualifying mark on the day. He would have to run 20.85 for an automatic ticket and has four meets left to make the standard.

Crabbe who qualified for the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham, England, will skip the event which conflicts with the NCAA Championships. At the Feb 8 Rod McCravy Memorial in Lexington, Kentucky, Crabbe was third in the 200 meters in 21.34 lowering his time from 21.52 in his previous outing. His best is 21.10 from 2002. He was also third in the 60 meters in 6.78 seconds. Crabbe's next meet is the March 1-2 SEC Championships in Gainesville, Florida.
