Samuel Comstock Samuel Comstock, born about 1628; died about 1660; married Anne Tucker. Anne was living Feb 10, 1667. She married 2) John Smith, the mason. The court records of Hartford, Conn., show that 'Samuel Comstock gave recongnizance March 1, 1648, for ten days of good behavior and for satisfying what damage Mr. Robins shall sustain for the want of hisservant.' When, in 1653, was with the Dutch seemed imminent, Samuel went on the 'frigott Swallow' to Block Island and seized the goods and people there appertaining to a Dutch Captain Kempo Sybando, and took them to New London, apparently to Gov. Hohn Winthrop. In the same year Samuel was in RI. Samuel Comstock bought of John Smith his house and lot in Providence, RIMarch 1, 1654.. The Town Council of Providence took action about the estate of Samuel Comstock and John Smith, deceased, on March 9, 1660. OnMay 4, 1661, Anne Smith of Providence, widow of John Smith, formerly wife of Samuel Comstock, Deceased, sold to Roger Mowry the house and home share of her husband, Samuel Comstock. It comprised four acres in a row of housed in the north part of Providence. Mr. W. W Chapin states that it was near the corner of North Main and Abbott Streets and probably bounded west by Sexton St.2 He was born in 1628.1 He was the son of William Comstock and Elizabeth Daniel. Samuel Comstock died in 1660.1

COMSTOCK - Origin of the name - Parts quoted from The Comstock Family Comstock is a place name. Its derivation undoubtedly traces to avillage in Debonshire, England, called Culmstock which is located off theRiver Clum some ten miles east of Tiverton and an equal distance south ofTaunton. The village probably derived its name from the fact that inmediaeval times it was customary to erect 'stocks' or stockades aroundrural communities as a protection against wolves and marauders. Thisparticular stockade being located on the River Clum or Colm came to bedesignated Colmstocke or Culmstock. In considering the origin of family names, it must be borne in mindthat surnames in England did not become permanent or hereditary until theEleventh or Twelfth Centruies. Prior to that, a man's given name came tohave the additional designation of his vocation such as John (the) Smithor Robert (the) Cooper, or one might be known from the place o hisorigin, as Thomas de Mille or Peter de Culmstock. Frequently the de (of)was droped as superfluous. It is not surprising, therefore, to find records in the parishRegisters of the small towns of Devonshire and Somersetshire, not far,from Culmstok, of such names as Petro de Columstok, 1241; John deCulmstok, 1189; Robert de Culmstok, 1189. Samuel Willett Comstock, in his extensive researches in England,found records of some 122 early Comstocks, including that of a family atTimberscomve in the first year of the reign of Richard I (1189), whereinis named John de Culmstok, his wife Alice, and son Rovert. This is theeaarliest known reference to the name as applied to personsl 'I do think from a survey of that country with only two records ofWilliam found, that our William went from London to Yeovil or Cussy Rivaland raised his family there. Yeovil parish registers 1620-1640 have notso far as I know been published and I think it may possibly contaim them,as there was a Danyell Comstock near by, in town of Closworth, SomersetCounty, 1614 and 1615.' Described as Follows- Arms; or, (gold) a sword point downward, issuing from a cresent in basegules (red), between two bears rampant sable (black); an elephant is indicative of personal prowess and sagacity. The bear symbolize courage. The sword and crescent indicate participation in the Crusades. Crest; an elephant rampant proper, issuing out of a baron's coronet. A History and Genealogy of the Comstock Family in America John Adams Comstock William Comstock -- About 1635, or shortly there after, there came from England to theMassachusetts settlements one William Comstock. From whence he sailed and on what ship, has not been ascertained. It is quite probable thatwith him were his wife Elizabeth and four, or possibly all five of hischildren. It is believed that he first sojourned in the vicinity ofWatertown, Massachusetts, but that very shortly he transferred toWethersfield, Connecuticut. It is a matter of rrecord that he held lands on the ConnecticutRiver in Wethersfield in the year 1641, and that these land had beenpurchased from on Richard Milles. Prior to taht, he is recorded ashaving been one of the twenty-six men from Wethersfield in the expeditioncommanded by Capt. John Mason, that captured the Pequot Fort at Mystic,Connecticut, May 26, 1637, killing about five hundred indians. On February 25, 1661 or 62, 'Ols Goodman Comstock' was electedSexton, 'to order youth in the meeting house, sweep the meeting house andbeat out dogs,' at 40 shillings a year, to dig all graves, and have 4sfor a grave for a moan or woman, and 2s for children, to be paid by thesupervisors. The date of his death is unknown, but the History of New Londonstates taht he lived to old age, on Post Hill near the north corner ofWilliams and Bauxhall Streets. Richard Mylls was plaintiff against 'Willi Combstocke' and JohnSadler, defedants, in an action for slander, Aug 1, 1644, before theCourt of Elections, Hartford, to the damage of 200 pounds. We have, therefore, as the beginning of our record of the comstockfamily in America.2 William Comstock was born in 1595 at England.1 He married Elizabeth Daniel between 1636 and 1660.1 William Comstock died in 1683.1

Vietz) gives the wife of William Comstock as Elizabeth Daniel.2 Elizabeth Daniel was born in 1608.1 She married William Comstock between 1636 and 1660.1 Elizabeth Daniel died in 1665.1

Widow Mary Morehouse was born in 1695.1 She married Samuel Morehouse Jr before 1734.1 Widow Mary Morehouse married Daniel Comstock, son of Daniel Comstock and Elizabeth Wheeler, circa 1734.1 Widow Mary Morehouse died on 4 January 1787 according to the family Bible record.1 She was buried after 4 January 1787; in the Upper Hill Cemetery, Kent, CT.1
