Section 1: The Nature of Magnetism

Key Facts
1. Magnetic poles that are alike repel each other and Magnetic poles that are unlike attract each other.
2. Magnetic feild lines spread out from one pole, curve around a magnet, and return to the other pole.
3.In a magnetized material all or most of the domains are arranged in the same direction.

Vocab
Magnetism- the attraction of a magnet for another object.
Magnetic pole- the end of any magnet.
Magnetic field- The region of magnetic force around a magnet.
Magnetic field lines- the lines that map ou the magnetic field around a magnet.
Atom- the smallest particle of an element.
Element- one of about 100 basic materials that make up all matter.
Nucleus- The center of an Atom.
Proton- Nuclear particles containing a postitive charge.
Electrons- tiny particles that orbit an atom.
Magnetic domain- A cluster of billions of Atoms that all have magnetic fields that are lined up in the same way.
Ferromagnetic Material- A material that shows strong magnetic effects.
Permanent magnet- A magnet made of a material that keep its magnetism.

How Magnets are made:
If the magnetic field is strong enough, two processes take place. First, the domains that poin in the direction of the magnetic firls become larger by lining up the fields of neighboring domains. Second, domains that are not pointing in the same directionas the magnetiv field rotate toward the magnetic field. The result is that the majority of domains line up in the same direstion, With its domains aligned, the material is a magnet.

Facts you need to know for Review:
1. Domains create magnetism.
2.In an unmagnetized object domains are not aligned.

Review
1. What happens if you bring together two like poles? Two unlike poles?
2. How are magnetic domains aranged in a magnet? How are the arranged in an unmagnetized object?
3. What parts of an atom produce magnetism?
4. How is a magnet made?
GOOD NOTE TAKING FOR THE UNABLE!
1. Copy all importent facts first in a legible manner
2.write down the page where you will study the notes later.
3. Try to memorize the facts so you can pass a test.
4. Do you homework off of your notes!!
