Food Ration:

Can't live without but not enough to live with it!
Food delivery schedule:
Mon A breast-size piece of chicken/person.
Wed A tiny fish/person + vegetable
Fri Oil, firewood and rice.
Food was delivered weekly. The ration was for one week. Those who had relatives
in the third country might buy their food from the market of course with a very expensive price.

Famous food: G MN:

It is literally translated as "land-mined chicken". It was called so because the markets in camps were full of chicken with very little meat left like a chicken that stepped on mine and you can imagine that what's left was bone. Refugees loved to grind these chicken(of course with bone because it was the main part!) and made some wonderful dishes! If you're interested in Refugee Cooking Tips. Click here Now!!!

Accomodation:

"No privacy, Can't turn at night without touching someone! Location & space were extremely value. For example the outside area of the big house which accommodates about 350 people) was very desirable because there is more fresh air. Only rich people could afford to live the outside of the house. On average each person was provided less than 3.5 square feet of space. Because of the limit in space new kind of business grew in camp. It was similar to real estate. The difference was only people who had special "connections" could do it. The price varies within 50 to 400 dollars. Some people lm giu (get rich) by this way.

Rules:

There are about 80 rules. But the following is essential:

  1. Labor duty: Everybody had to do labor duty approximately once a week. For instance cleaning the sewer around the camp.
  2. Salute Thai national anthem twice a day at 8AM and 6PM.
  3. Obey curfew time ( at 10:30PM).
  4. Refugees are not allowed to buy food from market of the other side of the fence.
  5. No alcohol.
  6. ...

Law system

  • MOI: Ministry Of Interior
    1. Camp Commander.
    2. Vice camp Commander.
        Security:
      1. Chief of Security.
      2. Second in command.
      3. Thai soldiers.
      4. Vietnamese (who worked for Thai M.O.I and they were simply called M.O.I).
  • Vietnamese Community
    1. Chief of Vietnamese Community.
    2. Vice president of Vietnamese Community.
    3. Security guards.
Actually Chief of Vietnamese Community does not have any power over M.O.I. M.O.I's decision is untouchable and irreversible. Vietnamese Community is like communist government in Vietnam. There was a saying:Trn Cng Sn, Gap Cng ng. (Escaping Communist then to be persecuted by Vietnamese Community!). Refugees lived in constant fear of being beaten up by Thai police and Vietnamese guards.
