| ABOUT US AND OUR HORSES Why do we raise horses? Well, one of my (Larry's) first memories is that of watching my father and grandfather plowing a field behind the old farmhouse in the mid-forties with walking plows and teams of Belgian horses. At the end of the day, I got to sit on one of them. Notice I said sit on, not straddle. We worked horses into the fifties. After my schooling was completed, I taught school and raised Appaloosas. I switched to Quarter horses at the death of my "Appy" stud. I now am retired and raise and train Quarter horses "full time". So you see, horses are just part of me. Dawn's love affair with horses began before she could walk, riding double in front of her mother. She spent summers in the fifties working as a riding instructor at a camp in Watts, Oklahoma. She went on to ride and show horses in the East. Dawn eventually found her way to Michigan, was a schoolteacher and has retired to follow her dream of ranch life and raising horses. She enjoys teaching others how to ride. Although relatively new to the Quarter horse business, we (the LH Ranch) have collected a group of foundation bred Quarter horses. The majority of our mares are from the Wilson Craig Farm in Prairie, Mississippi. This herd originated (in the 50's) from "King Ranch" horses. Their blood goes back to King and Wimpy. The LH Ranch stallion, "Weavers Doc O Leo", is from the Weaver Ranch at Big Sandy, Montana. They have been raising Ranch horses since 1888 and were recently named Montana Quarter Horse Ranch of the Year. They pride themselves on raising quality, all-around ranch horses. So our stock has the bone, stamina, conformation and personality to do what is asked of them. Our horses are not pampered, but they are handled daily and are comfortable around people. Come choose your quality-bred Quarter horse here in southern Michigan. |
