Activity Report: Mid-October to mid-November

Fire Drill, Match Game: How the Guide Law relates to good Citizenship.

Healthy Lifestyle game. Debate: Curfew, Bedtimes, Allowance, sharing in Home Duties.

Made wonderful centrepieces (small pumpkin hollowed out -arrangement of dried grasses & Halloween theme decorations added). The pumpkins were donated to the Bayview Centre where they used them to decorate the tables in all the residents' dining rooms.

Visited the Pointe Claire Fire Station and learned all about our first response system & fire department. Followed up with a visit to Station 5 where a police woman spoke to the girls about the job and law enforcement in general. Girls made a floor plan of the fire escape routes in their homes.

"Tried" to tie a human reef knot, played BUG-GO: A bingo style game where participants learn all about bugs, prizes were awarded in the form of gummy worms. Citizenship requirements, puzzles. 3 Pathfinders (and Judy & Joanne) attended the Remembrance Day Parade.

Mid-November to mid-December: Girls made "me" collages, with photos from home, magazine cut-outs and other stuff. The collages will be displayed on Enrollment night. We are learning Taps in sign language. Promise and law games and activities: one games involved putting fragments of the promise and law on slips of paper on the floor, girls wrapped a team member in masking tape, who then rolled around on the floor until all papers were stuck to her. After team retrieved all the fragments the teams had to assemble the promise and law correctly. 2nd and 3rd year girls worked on planning the enrollment. Made Christmas centerpieces for the Bayview�.beautiful! Girls also made one for themselves.

Mid-December to mid-February:

Enrolled 9 new Pathfinders during a candlelight ceremony envisioned by theolder girls. Played a new game called "Moose". Discussed eating disorders.

Girls' Week-End Camp at Maison du Ruisseau / Bois-de-Liesse. Friday Night:we made our own Facial Scrub and Lip Gloss; tried different face masques;girls relaxed with cucumbers on their eyes while listening to examples of many different forms of music. Discussed (and looked at books about)make-up and adornment in our culture as compared with other parts of theworld. Snowshoe hike & team scavenger hunt. International: Mexican Fiesta. Snow ball target competition. Left-over camp meeting: looked atmagazines and discussed women's image in advertisements & the media.Discussed environmentally low-impact sports.

We made Valentines (attachedto red silk roses) for the residents of the Bayview Centre. BePrepared/First Aid: girls had to "put together" their own version of a District first aid kit. Christened the new District TV/VCR: watched a National Geographic Video- The Grizzlies.

ONE FINAL NOTE OF INTEREST:Chelsea Bayer (1st year) has been accepted as one of 14 girls going to Our Cabana this summer!

 

Mid-February to mid-March:

Played Outdoor/Conservation games: Pointe Claire Squares (Hollywood Squares format works very well as a teaching format!).

Visitedthe Stewart Hall Art Gallery: The exhibit was "Matting Season: Hooked Mats of the Grenfell Mission", girls worked on small "canvases" with wool in the studio afterward.

Travel to Spain : girls are assigned challenges which they will present to the group in the weeks to come. Played "Making Ends Meet"; a board game that illustrates the life of a woman living in a shanty town in Mexico. A group of girls presented their research on obtaining passports to the group.

A Pathfinder who really wanted to travel to Greece (rather than Spain) presented a challenge from the World/Global Understanding pathway --common words & simple phrases in Greek.
