We are a small group of 10 girls, a guide helping in the unit and 2 leaders that meet once a week after supper in a local church and have a lot of fun and games while learning about guiding and what it entails.

Intro. to Sparks, name game, made friendship chain. Sparks story, made I-am-growing booklet. Thanksgiving meeting: talked about Thanksgiving and fall, turkey craft. Fire drill, learned about different weather and appropriate clothing Learned more about Sparks,made the "Spark mobile", things that we do in Sparks: games, outdoor activities, songs, crafts, helping out the community Halloween party! costune, craft (ghost puppet, and jack-o-lantern), gave out treats, scary story, made spider cakes. Talked about remembrance day, made invitation cards for parents to the enrollment ceremony . The Enrollment ceremony, tea party
with the parents Fishing theme, made fish out of paper plates, hooks and fishing rods, played bridges and rivers. Made advent calendar, Christmas craft for the elderly. Food Drive/Toy Drive: asked girls to bring items from home and explained the meaning of Christmas. Practiced Christmas carols, made Christmas decoration (Candy Cane door knob). Guest speaker: Karen MacDonnell who is a dental hygienist, she explained dental hygiene and everyone got a kit bag to take home. Christmas party. Talked about the holidays and new year's resolutions. Made bookmark to encourage reading, story: Amazing Grace (lesson : if you put your mind to it, you can do anything). Indoor and outdoor games day. Made Thinking Day World Friendship fund calendar and coin collectors from film canisters. Hawaiian beach party: made necklaces and hair clips with flowers, beach towels, sunglasses, bathing suits, etc Treat of ice cream cake. Made Valentine's day craft: butterfly with colored papers and toilet paper roll, filled them with chocolates. Chinese new year party (special guests Kim, Katherine and Meghan Freeman): stories, paper cutting craft, tangrams, games, taught simple words, Chinese snacks, gave lucky money. Theme - "self-esteem" - Stories: 1. Paper bag princess; 2. I want to be a butterfly; Made Sunflower/happy face; planted sunflowers in styrofoam cups; talked about self awareness, self esteem, and being happy with ourselves. Theme - cookies - made thank you notes for buying our cookies; talked about why we sell cookies every year, manners whiling selling cookies. Bridging with Guides - crafts, games,
campfire, treats At our Easter party we talked about Easter, what it means, and had an egg hunt, along with games and treats. The girls made an Easter chick in a basket. Spring and World Health Day were two other meeting themes. Spring filled itself with games and a popcorn apple blossom craft. With World Health, we focused on good and bad hygiene and good and bad foods through a number of games. This also helped the girls to identify the different food groups. The Sparks also put their artistic talents together by drawing the good and junk food! |
