Spanish Civil War Links
Information Sites
http://www.users.dircon.co.uk/~warden/scw/scwindex.htmA very good site to start from; it offers a concise summary of the causes of the Spanish Civil War along with a glossary of the more important terms that are used throughout. Finally, a lengthy look at the main events of the war is presented in point form.
http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/9820/This is a very left-wing oriented site; clearly noted in their first link, "The Marxist Internet Archive". It succeeds in being very informative but only covers one side of the story in true detail. The site offers links of various sorts: generalized essays, Basque autonomous struggles, Canadians in the war, the International brigades, the Catholic Church, and the Trotskyist influence. Also, they offer sites relating to various memorabilia and propaganda from the war, including pictures of many posters and stamps.
http://www.au.af.mil/au/aul/bibs/spain/spainw.htm#booThis web site offers a truly in depth listing of books, documents, and periodicals that would be a tremendous resource for further research into the details of the Spanish Civil War.
http://flag.blackened.net/revolt/spaindx.htmlThis site is of Socialist/Anarchist orientation and intends on expressing the stories and views of those aided in the mass collectivization of rural lands. We are presented with links to various essays, letters, and other personal accounts.
Poster and Images Sites
Note: An enormous percentage of the following Spanish Civil War propaganda posters are in favour of the left-wing causes because there were very few posters distributed by the right-wing causes. These posters were distributed throughout Republican (Left Wing) Spain; in that region’s attempts to rally the population against General Francisco Franco’s invading Nationalist army.
This link leads to a wonderful document on the history and general meaning of the propaganda posters that were found throughout Republican Spain, especially their fortress of Madrid.

BURN Collection
Excerpt from the BURN Collection Web Site:
"Some of the posters were created anonymously and many were produced by the Spanish Artist's Union, who infused the most vigorous experiments of the time (expressionism and the constructivism of Soviet artists) with the simplicity and directness that are the traditions of the revolutionary message. The artists, printers, lithographers and those who distributed the works labored under the perilous conditions of air raids and artillery fire. Faced with shortages of materials and an inadequate supply of electricity for light and printing presses, they nevertheless managed to create powerful works that still reverberate in our time.

http://www.alba-valb.org/albashouts.htmPablo Picasso’s Guernica
In 1937 the German Luftwaffe Air Force succeeded in obliterating the Basque (North-Central Spain) town of Guernica. This would be the first time the Luftwaffe would test the first stage of the Blitzkrieg that they would use to wage war on Europe. These two sites look at the history and symbolism of Pablo Picasso’s marvelous canvas, Guernica, which was painted the year of the bombing.
