Twentieth Century Assignments

Assignment Two, October

The Turn of the Century through World War One

Select one of the following topics and write a three to five page precise. It should be three to five paragraphs in length, containing a clear introductory paragraph, and a short conclusion. The final draft should be word processed and free of spelling mistakes. A possible site of interest is the World War I Archives.

1. As the nineteenth century drew to a close, many new developments-technological, scientific, intellectual- had already taken place, or were about to take place. Of the many new developments, select the ONE which you think exerted the most influence over the first two decades of the twentieth century. Clearly explain the development you have chosen. Then, offer specific examples of when and how it was the major influence you suggest it to be.

2. Choose ONE of the following traditional concepts or practices and ONE of the following nations. Discuss the state of this ONE practice in your choice of nation and the turn of the Twentieth Century. Concepts: imperialism, monarchy, or religion. Nations: Great Britain, France, Russia, or Austro-Hungary.

3. Discuss what you think to be the main or major cause of the First World War. Clearly explain your cause, prove why it was the main cause, how it related to other causes if applicable, and, perhaps, why other causes were subordinate to your choice. [Note: the assassination of the Arch-Duke is NOT an acceptable cause.]

4. What was the major immediate change or effect brought about by the First World War? Clearly explain your change or effect, show what was different before and after, and why it was important. For the scope of this assignment, `immediate' shall be defined as the years 1918 -1930, so the idea that `the major result of WWI was WWII' is off limits at this time.

5. It is often suggested that the main cause of World War II was the failure of the peace which ended World War I. What was the major flaw in the peace treaty, peace process, or immediate effect of either that helped to produce a less than satisfactory peace in Europe in the 1920's. Clearly identify this flaw, discuss how or why this flaw was allowed to exist, and/or how another settlement might have been a better, yet still realistic, solution c. 1920. (Do not discuss the `how this led to WW II' issue here.)

6. A common theme in the early twentieth century revolves around "Woodrow Wilson and the Lost Peace." What was Wilson's role in the peace talks after WWI, and did he lose the peace?

7. In his book, The Age of Extremes, the historian Eric Hobsbawm marks the start of the twentieth century by the start of World War One. In what ways did this war mark the beginning of the 20th century?

8. Analyze a selection of poetry, song, art or other popular expressions of WWI in terms of the historical events of the times. How and why did views of war change?

9. Read All Quiet of the Western Front by Erich Marie Remarque. Discuss the importance and impact of this work in and on its times.

For any of the above, direct quotes and references are NOT necessary. However, deal in specific terms and events. And be sure events referred to are well known. Obscure references must be explained.

Pre-submission possible. Due Date: end October.
