| Suicide's Note |
The Calm,
|
The poem above shows the power of poetry. A poem has characteristics distinctive from works of prose and other kinds of literature. A poem can deliver the feeling and imagery, in surprising clarity, even in the shortest and simplest combination of words. "Suicide's Note" is only three lines, but it successfully illustrates the desire of someone ready to commit suicide by going into the river. In the poem, the victim feels drawn to the river by an unmanageable force. Although the poem is only one sentence, the reader can feel the victim's mind. A prose would hardly be able to carry the mind of a victim in such a short sentence. Moreover, "Suicide's Note" shows a poem's ability to deliver imagery along with the speaker's attitude about the imagery. In this poem, the cold, calm mood of the river is clearly depicted. The repetition of "k" sound adds to the cold atmosphere of the poem. A poem's greatest power is its effectiveness in delivering the emotion and imagery of the speaker. As shown in the poem above, a poet can express what he has in mind by short, simple words. |
