He was brought up on a farm and graduated from Waynesburg College in 1856. He followed teaching as a profession a number of years, and while teaching studied law and was admitted to the bar. For the last thirteen years he has been engaged in farming and stock raising in Lincoln county, Kans.; and was elected to the fifty-second, fifty-third and fifty-fourth congresses.
