BAKER, STEPHEN, merchant, congressman, was born
Aug. 12, 1819, in New York city. At an early age he engaged
in mercantile pursuits, from which he retired in 1849 to a
country seat in Dutchess county, N. Y. He was elected a
representative from New York to the thirty-seventh congress.
