Introduction to Sorting the Bolling Families
Welcome to the Wildest, Wackiest, and very likely the most
screwed up genealogy on the Web.
It would be a crime for any sane person to involve themselves
with this genealogy without first reviewing the list of characters
involved. Even Shakespeare would have had a problem making this
one believable.
There's grandma, who is said to have turned cartwheels down the
main street of a Virginia City, buck naked.
There's a crazy Judge, said to have had God tell him in a clear
voice and old bible words to write a genealogy.
There's his brother also, a well known Virginia politician, in
the late 1800s who published it. These boys were anything but
serious genealogists; they went on to use only one book for a
source, which was written by the Crazy Judge himself, who admits
he is the author, and in the preface of the book they admit to
leaving out entire branches of the family because they were unsightly.
But it gets worse, he even admits to not knowing which list of names
he ought to have used in the first place.
From there it goes downhill, it's so fouled up, that the branches
of this family have been colored coded, or named , to tell them
apart: There's the Reds, Blues, White Bolling, and the Ugly Bollings.
But hang on for more, for these guys were just warming up; we
have learned of an entire graveyard, which once contained many
headstones, said now to have been reduced to dust. Their argument
was that they wanted to move one of the graves to a new resting place.
Then there's the retired US General, heading up a task force called
the Bolling Family Association, who has decided to set up a committee
to officially sort out the Benjamin's. My opinion is that you
ought to hang on to your parents around these guys, or you may loose
them.
It doesn't end here; there were so many people in the same area
of Virginia using the same names, and about the same age, that no
one has them sorted out. Even the Parish records fail to agree
with the genealogies which have been published.
So if these Bollings are your genealogy also, WAKE UP, WADE IN
and HELP US find the bare facts. (Sorry grandma, no pun intended.)
