Tigers Fall Behind Again, Lose 7-6

Looking to clinch a tie for third, the Tigers faced the 1-10 Sluggers today, but still seemed somewhat shell-shocked over their losses to the Panthers.

Katie Westmoreland started for the Tigers, struggled on the first two batters, throwing seven balls in hitting the first and walking the second.  She got ahead of the third batter before walking her on a fill count to bring up cleanup hitter Jamie Dennis, one of only three batters to manage a hit off Katie this year.  Katie dug in to retire Dennis on four pitches for a strikeout, then walked Hannah Wilson on four pitches.  In a Jekyll-Hyde inning, she recovered to strikeout the next batter on three pitches, then hit the next batter on the following pitch.  A final walk pushed in the third run to end the inning.  The Tigers were unable to respond in their half of the inning, reaching base only when Katie was hit by a pitch.

Rutherford pitched the second inning for the Tigers, but for her third straight outing was ineffective, walking four and hitting two, picking a strikeout along the way, as the Tigers fell behind 6-0.  Audrey Hipple started things for the Tigers in the second, drawing the first of three walks, Tina Savic and Irene Tsinajinnie behind her, to load the bases.  Ashley Favors was hit by a pitch to get the Tigers on the board, scoring Allyson Williams from third (running for the still-hampered Audrey), and Kinsey Phillips walked to add a second run.  Caroline Kilday walked as well, bringing the Tigers back to striking distance, down 6-3.

Katie's return to the mound started well, striking out Wilson before walking three.  Working with the bases full, Katie struck out two of the next three batters to hold the Sluggers to one run.  The Tigers took advantage of Katie's effort, stringing together walks to Rutherford, Allyson, Audrey, Tina, Irene, and Stami Luchette to make it a 7-6 game, heading into the open inning, where they had dominated the Sluggers this season.

That domination continued, spearheaded by Kinsey.  The Sluggers leadoff batter reached on a popup in front of the plate, just out of the reach of a hustling Ashley from the catcher's spot, but striking her before going foul.  A fly to Kinsey at second produced the front end of a double play, as she alertly threw to Katie to catch the runner off first.  The third batter produced the third out, grounding to Kinsey, who fielded the ball cleanly to close the inning.

One run to tie, and two to win were all the Tigers needed, but that has suddenly proved daunting for the Tigers.  For the third game in a row, the Tigers could not manage to dent the scoreboard in the open inning.  The Sluggers retired the Tigers as easily as the Tigers had done it to them, and preserved their second win of the season.

The Tigers now move to their final game, taking on the Thrashers with third place on the line.  In a scheduling fluke, four of the leagues five teams can win their final game, should the Tigers win on Monday, and the Titans prevail over the Thrashers Tuesday.

Congratulations to Stami Luchette, Arcado Elementary School's Student Council President for the 2001-2002 school year.  In the school elections completed this past week, Stami was elected by her peers to lead the student council as she heads into fifth grade.
...And a belated happy birthday wish to Caroline Kilday, sneaking in her tenth birthday between the two Panthers games last weekend.  Sorry it passed us while we weren't paying attention, or we would have been sure to properly embarrass you!

Tiger of the Game

In doing just as she has all season for the Tigers, Irene Tsinajinnie scored a run and picked up an RBI on two walks while holding down left field duty, quietly helping the team and earning overdue credit for her contributions with today's Tiger of the Game.

Kinsey Phillips earned a game ball as well, keying the critical defensive stop in the fourth inning with a putout and two assists, including the pivotal double play.
