Lesson 5 (Days 8, 9)

Objective :  Adapt a short story to film

Day 8
Procedure:
Hand out and review a brief history of
trailers.
Play trailer for Crash
In groups of four have students discuss the trailer and look at the following questions:
1)  Did the trailer grab your attention?
2)  After having seen the film, does the trailer do the film justice (why/why not)?
3)  What dramatic elements are used in the trailer?
4)  Does the text used in the trailer add meaning to or detract from the tailer?
5)  List sounds, images, lighting, camera shots and angles used in the trailor.

In the same groups students should now take out their text "Cora Unashamed".  Students should take five minutes to individually write a brief summary of the story.  Reflecting back to the themes discussed on day 1.  As a group the students should then select which themes they would like to use to create a three minute film trailer for "Cora Unashamed".  Students should also underline specific dialogue and or language they would like to incorporate into their trailer.

Day 9
This lesson will introduce students to film making by having them due a short three minute trailer.  In future units students can then be introduced to creating their own short film.

Procedure:
Hand out the
script to the first scene of Crash.
Read the script aloud as a class.
Students should then get back into their groups to write their script for the trailer Cora Unashamed utilizing the key themes and language used in the text.  Students should note what music, customes, set, props, lighting, shots and angles they will be using in their trailer.  Students must keep in mind that the trailer should only be three minutes long so they will have to cut must of the plot out of the story.  Students will have one week to work on the trailer at home, reherse and finally film!

Note:  Students will be assessed on all assignments included in the Unit Plan.  Assessment will be done based on creativity, organization, development and understanding of task, and understanding of the process.
