| The The 123rd Street Rap by Willie Perdomo is about life in Spanish Harlem. So, I am going to give you a little history on how Spanish Harlem came about. Since The 1940's Hispanics have called East Harlem in New York City, "Spanish Harlem" or "El Barrio." Hispanics found that calling East Harlem, "Spanish Harlem" gave them a sense of belonging. As Chinatown does for the Chinese and Little Italy does for the Italians. They have found this name with love and pride. They celebrate this name at parades, community events, and public functions. Spanish Harlem is very traditional and a large part of their community is Hispanic. Spainish Harlem has become a welcoming neighborhood for migrants and immigrants, all looking for the hope of a good future, the goal of finding jobs, and to make it in America. The population of Spanish Harlem has a high energy and strong desire to create a better and promising future for themselves and their families. |
