| His Life: Willie Perdomo grew up in New York City's, Spanish Harlem. He lived only a few blocks from Lanston Hughe's house. "Langston Hughes was such an influence on my writing," said Perdomo. He was a poet and member of New York's shout movement. Perdomo's poems depicted his life growing up in East Harlen (also known as Spanish Harlme) and often sounded like hip-hop or rap. He focused his poetry on topics such as drugs, crime, despair, AIDS, hope, and resilience. Perdomo is stll alive today and living in New York City. He is working on completing another collection of poetry called, "Smoking Lovely." |
