Behind the "123rd Street Rap"
The "123rd Street Rap," explains the other side to Spanish Harlem. It takes you to the darker side of the town. As great as the town may seem. it does have some down falls. As any town does. Spanish Harlem is well known for its music and Latin roots. The poem talks about the other side to the Spanish Harlem. In line six the poem reads, "Automatic bullets bounce off stoop steps." This helps the reader become aware that their are shootings in Spanish Harlem. Then in line 22 the poem reads, "Drug posses ready to rumble," indicating to the reader that Spanish Harlem also has a problem with drugs and drug dealers. " "123rd Street Rap" makes the reader very aware of what life living in Spanish Harlem is like. The poem even goes as far as to talk about how ceilings in houses are ready to crumble. The poem is very good and has a nice flow to it. Every other stanza ryhmes, giving it that hip-hop flavor Willie Perdomo is so well known for.
