| Practical Faith Do you practice what you preach? You might have to conclude Not, if you read Emanuel Charles McCarthy on violence. He's against it and says Jesus was, too. As a priest of the Eastern Rite of the Catholic Church, Fr. McCarthy founded the Program for the Study and Practice of Nonviolence at Notre Dame University. What the good Father says that's relevant here is, Jesus meant what he said and said what he meant when he spoke as the Lamb of God, Love Your Enemies. If you think that gospel won't preach, you may find Fr. McCarthy's point of view plain nonsense, or perhaps unsettling, even compelling. You can find his work on the Christian Nonviolent Network link below. Here's an appetizer from McCarthy on Just War: The most curious thing about this myth and its acceptance is that nonviolence, which is the one political philosophy today that appeals directly to the gospel, should be regarded as unchristian while reliance on force and cooperation with massive programs of violence is sometimes seen as an obvious and elementary Christian duty. http://c-n-n.org/literature.asp Additional contemplation on peace includes Jim Douglass on "Nonviolence or Nonexistence" in The Other Side. |
